With Easter fast approaching, it's got me wondering about holidays and what kinds of things we can do to make them special for Lewis while still keeping the meaning of the holiday at the forefront. Growing up we had Easter baskets and went to church. We did an Easter egg hunt around the house usually, and mom made a coconut cake. We were all happy that Jesus rose from the dead, but I just don't have a very vivid picture in my mind of much regarding our celebration of Easter.
I do remember when I was in high school that mom realized that we did not have a lot of "traditions," and felt like it was time to develop some things. At that age we were all quite reluctant to go along with too many of her suggestions. So while our family is pretty young, it would be great to hear what some others of you do to celebrate Easter (or other holidays). Any ideas?

Shelley,
It is funny that you have this post today. I was just thinking about how hard it is to really bring in the true meaning of Easter with young kids. I mean, they understand Jesus being born as a baby at Christmas etc..because that is something they can relate to, but being raised from the dead is hard for a 2 year old to really "get". :)
Anyway, we have decided that at Easter we will do Easter baskets, dye eggs, etc... and of course we have a huge collection of plastic eggs around our house that have been "hunted" numerous times. I think for now, besides talking about Jesus, there isn't too much to do. But, I have heard some ideas that as kids get older (like Kind. or school age) they did an Easter "tree" where they had a small tree that they wrote down different blessings and each week for each person in the family and hung them on the tree. Or, they had an "egg hunt" and inside the Easter eggs were verses that when they sat down and put them together, they told the Easter story and the kids had to put them in the right order.
Anyway, I think there are ways to make it fun and still bring out the real meaning of the holiday. You know, Christmas is so much easier and the idea of Santa can fit in with the Christian tradition pretty easily with his generosity and spirit of love that fits in with the holiday. But, the Easter Bunny, well, he doesn't really have much to do with Jesus' resurrection :). We will still have the EB bring a basket of goodies for fun, but try to keep our focus on the real meaning of the day! Xristos Voskres! Jesus is Risen! :)
Hi! A little late, but have you heard about those Easter resurrection cookies? This is a pretty cool way to work with kids and teach them the story. Website is below:
